Student Houses in Bowerham, Lancaster
Bowerham is the part of Lancaster most people picture when they think of student housing. It sits on the hill south east of the city centre, built mostly of red brick terraces and semis, and it has housed students for decades.
The obvious draw is the University of Cumbria. Its Lancaster campus is on Bowerham Road, in the middle of the area, so a great many Cumbria students end up within a few minutes' walk of their lectures. If you are studying there, Bowerham is about as convenient as Lancaster gets.
Lancaster University students live here too. The campus is further out at Bailrigg, but the bus links are direct and the journey is short, and plenty of people decide that a livelier, more settled neighbourhood is worth a short ride each morning.
The housing is mostly Victorian and Edwardian terraces, which in practice means three, four and five bedroom houses with a decent sized kitchen and a yard or small garden. Rooms tend to be a reasonable size. Because the area has let to students for so long, landlords here are generally used to student tenancies and the houses are set up for sharing.
Day to day, Bowerham Road is the spine of the area, with a small parade of shops, a convenience store, a couple of takeaways and a pharmacy. It is enough for a pint of milk and a late night order without needing to go into town. Williamson Park, with the Ashton Memorial at the top of it, is a short walk away and is genuinely one of the nicer places in Lancaster to spend an afternoon.
The trade off is the hill. Lancaster is not flat, and Bowerham is up. Walking back from the city centre with a week's shopping is a proper climb. Most people get used to it quickly, and the buses run past the end of most streets.
