Student Houses in Scotforth, Lancaster

Scotforth runs along the A6 south of the city centre, which puts it neatly between town one way and Lancaster University the other. For anyone who wants a short commute to campus without living on it, that position is the whole appeal.

Because the A6 is the main road to the university, the bus service through Scotforth is one of the best in the city. Buses to campus run frequently through the day in term time, and the journey is short. The same buses take you into the centre in the other direction.

The housing is mixed. There are terraces closer to the main road, and larger semi detached houses on the residential streets running off it. Group sizes of three to five are common, and because the area is not exclusively student, the streets tend to be quieter than the most concentrated student districts.

Scotforth has a useful cluster of everyday shops along the A6, including a supermarket, takeaways and a couple of pubs. That matters more than it sounds when you are three miles from campus and two miles from the centre. There is also a post office and the usual run of local services.

It suits people who want a balance. You are not in the middle of the student scene, and you are not isolated either. For students with a car, parking is generally easier here than in the terraced streets nearer the centre, although you should always check what a specific house offers.

Being on a main road is the obvious trade off. Houses directly on the A6 get traffic noise, and it is worth asking which way the bedrooms face when you view. The streets set back from the road are noticeably quieter.
