Student Houses in Greaves, Lancaster
Greaves lies south of the city centre, west of the A6. It is a settled residential area of mostly semi detached and terraced houses, with more greenery than the streets closer to town.
The area has a mix of students and long term residents, which gives it a calmer feel than the most concentrated student streets. Groups who want a quieter house without being cut off tend to end up looking here.
Greaves Park, the large pub on the main road, is a well known local landmark and a useful meeting point. Beyond that, the area is served by shops on the nearby A6, which is also where you pick up the frequent buses down to Lancaster University.
The housing is a little more varied than in the Victorian terraced districts. You will find bay fronted terraces alongside interwar semis, so room sizes and layouts differ more than you might expect. Some houses have driveways, which is unusual closer to the centre and worth having if anyone is bringing a car.
For Lancaster University, the bus from the A6 is quick and runs often through term time. For the city centre you are looking at a walk of around 25 minutes, or a short bus ride.
Greaves suits students who are past the stage of wanting to live in the middle of everything. It is close enough to reach campus and town easily, far enough that the streets are quiet on a Tuesday night.
Because the housing is mixed, it is worth viewing more than one house before you commit. Two properties on neighbouring streets can differ a lot in room sizes, heating and whether there is anywhere to put a car, in a way that is less true in the uniformly terraced areas.
If you are weighing Greaves against Scotforth, the practical difference is the main road. Scotforth puts you right on the bus route at the cost of traffic. Greaves is a few minutes further from the stop and noticeably quieter for it, which suits some groups and frustrates others.
